DS/Wii WiFi Connection, 3DS Video app closing ⊟
Well that was a weird way to end the 3DS’s birthday. Along with releasing another vague firmware update for the 3DS last night, Nintendo announced that it’s closing the WiFi Connection service for DS and Wii games around the world on May 20, as well as its 3DS Video app in Japan and Europe at the end of the month (no word yet on the North American edition).
This won’t affect devices that use Nintendo Network for online features like the 3DS and Wii U, but this is a huge blow to a lot of games. Say goodbye to online multiplayer in Mario Kart DS and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. No more DLC for people who decide to pick up classics like Dragon Quest IX. Hope you don’t mind not accessing leaderboards or trading user-generated content (WarioWare DIY…) anymore!
You will still be able to purchase DSiWare games — online features for those titles will no long worker, though — and use the built-in web browser on the DSi, though.
This really, really sucks. I can deal with Nintendo Video shutting down, as it was a service that never lived up to its potential despite some fun offerings (shout-outs to Dinosaur Office). But losing WiFi Connection makes some quality DS games feel incomplete as far as content goes at best, and removes critical features in other titles at worst.SUPPORT TINY CARTRIDGE Join Club Tiny!
This makes me really really sad. :(
Holy crap, this DS game is amazing
Released in Japan a few years ago and inspired by a popular manga/anime, Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo features all sorts of fun minigames like: dog breakdancing, Super Mario Bros. 3-style face matching, and some kind of crying/ballet dancing activity. I need to import this.
Square Enix has posted a new countdown site, and numerous clues on the page — its Japanese title, its music, its typeface, Tetsuya Nomura and Gen Kobayashi’s involvement, etc. — point toward a follow-up to cherished Nintendo DS RPG The World Ends With You.
Before you break out the celebratory GIFs, we still don’t know if this will be a handheld/console release, a mobile-only affair, or what. Perhaps it’s a collectible card game for Japanese arcades, who knows. Or maybe it’s everything you ever dreamed during those lonely years when all hope for a sequel seemed lost, and the only way you could fall asleep was by imagining Neku spooning you.Buy: The World Ends With You See also: More The World Ends With You news
It’s a tiny cartridge reunion! Not everyone could make it, but almost everyone from the Nintendo side of the family is here — Game Boy, GBA, DS, and 3DS. There’s Sega’s Game Gear sandwiched between, wait, who are those guys? Oh, a couple relatives from overseas, Gunpei Yokoi’s kids, WonderSwan and WS Color, showed up!
Just a reminder that portable games are the best.Buy: Tiny Cartridge stickers for your DS/3DS cartridges See also: “Collection” by Terry Mack [Via The Gay Gamer]
WayForward’s Adventure Time game is releasing for 3DS, too — and not just DS, as was initially reported.
In addition to this fine boxart, we now have the game’s full title (Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!) and some details on its story:
“Finn and Jake wake up one morning to find their trash stolen by the Ice King. Jake couldn’t care less about half-eaten bananas, crumpled up burrito wrappers, and old chicken diapers – but when they find out the Ice King is using their stolen goods to construct a Garbage Princess, the heroes embark on a fantastical adventure to teach him a lesson!”
Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward is working with WayForward (Aliens: Infestation, Mighty Switch Force) on the action-adventure game’s storyline and quests.
Gaming news that is probably pertinent to the interests of some of my followers!
Nintendo and Tecmo Koei’s crossover strategy RPG, Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition, will release for DS this June 18 under the new title Pokemon’s Conquest — blame it on most Americans having no idea who Nobunaga is, why the Sengoku period warlord was so ambitious, or that he has a long-running strategy game series.
For those unfamiliar with the game’s concept:
OH HELL YES
Pendleton Ward, creator of Cartoon Network’s cherished program Adventure Time, has revealed that the show will receive a DS game later this year, courtesy of WayForward Technologies (Aliens: Infestation Mighty Switch Force).
I’m a little disappointed that it’s not for 3DS (a few early reports have called it a 3DS project), I still can’t wait to see what they do with Beemo in the game.
There are no details beyond what we’ve already shared, but Ward posted some fun sketches that you can see after the break. Next up: a Regular Show game. Yeahhh-uh.
Screenshots from the Ace Attorney Investigations 2 fan translation in progress. More than a year has passed since this Miles Edgeworth game released in Japan, and Capcom has still yet to announce a Western release, so I’m glad someone’s working on an English patch.
There are French, German, and Portuguese translations in the works, too. Follow their development here.

Amazon has marked down a number of titles worth your attention today, including Solatorobo, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, and Bit.Trip Saga. I’ve gathered the standout sales here — now’s the time to make sure you have something to play during the holiday break!
Nintendo DS games sales:
- Aliens Infestation - $19.12
- Chrono Trigger - $12.71
- Dragon Quest IV - $10.96
- Dragon Quest V - $16.97
- Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - $14.57
- Solatorobo - $17.13
- The World Ends With You - $12.60
Dragon Quest IV is honestly one of my Top 5 RPGs of All Time and for $10 that is quite a deal. If you’re looking for a DS RPG to play, do yourself a favor and pick it up.
If you can’t even afford that then you could always search around and get the original NES Dragon Warrior IV for one of those “emulationers” you kids keep talking about.
