Square Enix has posted a new countdown site, and numerous clues on the page — its Japanese title, its music, its typeface, Tetsuya Nomura and Gen Kobayashi’s involvement, etc. — point toward a follow-up to cherished Nintendo DS RPG The World Ends With You.
Before you break out the celebratory GIFs, we still don’t know if this will be a handheld/console release, a mobile-only affair, or what. Perhaps it’s a collectible card game for Japanese arcades, who knows. Or maybe it’s everything you ever dreamed during those lonely years when all hope for a sequel seemed lost, and the only way you could fall asleep was by imagining Neku spooning you.

Theatrhythm Persona 4 illustrations by Satake. I totally missed out on Persona 4 when it released for PlayStation 2, but after hearing so many great things about it, I’m definitely picking up the PS Vita port that releases this fall.

I wish this was a real thing SO HARD.
English Theatrhythm Final Fantasy screenshots demonstrate how character progression and skills will work for your heroes — there’s more to this 3DS title than just DJ Max Technika-style rhythm gameplay, after all.
Square Enix explains that different characters and skills will give advantages in the various stage types:
- Characters with high Strength or Magic skills can more easily defeat monsters in battle;
- Characters with high Agility can travel greater distances in the field with an increased chance of finding treasures.
- Characters with high Luck have greater odds of finding rare items and can avoid taking damage more easily.
Even though they’re crammed with data, these are the most attractive menu screens I’ve seen for a 3DS game.Preorder: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (free stylus!) Find: Nintendo DS/3DS release dates, discounts, & more See also: More Theatrhythm Final Fantasy news, media [Via Worthplaying]
I cannot wait for this game.
More evidence that Bravely Default: Flying Fairy will be one of the best looking 3DS games when it releases in Japan later this year, and eventually in the West I hope.
As for that strange title, apparently scenario writer Naotaka Hayashi (Steins;Gate) explained the name to Famitsu, and the meaning behind it is quite literal: “Have courage and renounce the promises and responsibilities that are expected of you.”

Limited edition Kingdom Hearts 3DS hitting Japan with Dream Drop Distance in March (click for larger image).
It looks a lot like the patterned Kingdom Hearts DSi released in Japan back in 2009, but the system’s glossy finish and the magenta crown give it a lot more “pop.” I would actually consider buying this — if I was a dude resigned to buying all the expensive Kingdom Hearts junk out there, and if the console weren’t region-locked.

Why are you region-locked, 3DS? I’d definitely consider buying this otherwise.
I may eventually anyway, since all the Japanese 3DS games I’m actually interested in appear to not be getting released over here…
:(
Just got back from MAGfest and it seriously was the best. Videos and more to come soon. Until then, I give you the man himself.
When Uematsu said, in very accented English, “I LOVE SAMUEL ADAMS” - that was pretty much when I lost it.
Eight minutes of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Along with Neku from The World Ends with You, you’ll see the game’s Pinnochio, The Three Musketeers, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Tron: Legacy scenes. There’s some silly AR stuff, too (04:00).
This hits Japan in March 2012. Square Enix hasn’t announced a U.S. release date for the game — or any of its 3DS titles (not counting Bust-a-Move Universe) — yet.

Neku Sakuraba appearing alongside Sora in Kingdom Hearts 3D (Dream Drop Distance). Though Square Enix has yet to answer fans’ prayers and put out a sequel to The World Ends With You, it has plopped the DS RPG’s hero into the next Kingdom Hearts game, according to a demo shown at Tokyo Game Show.
1UP’s Jeremy Parish posted impressions of the demo:
“Neku appears as a guest character in Sora’s side of the TGS demo — though not a playable guest. Both Neku and his rival/friend/frienemy Riku team up with captured dream-monsters this time around rather than fighting alongside licensed characters. Neku’s role is more that of the Disney-world guests from previous games.
He shows up, reveals that he’s caught in a “game,” leaving him 43 minutes to win or die. Naturally, he asks Sora to be his partner but ultimately decides the tousle-haired protagonist is ‘a weird guy’ and takes off. Sora follows, riding rails in pursuit of Neku, but quickly encounters a boss battle set in a cul-de-sac of Traverse Town.”
Hoping to see Neku/Sora fanart versions of this now.
